What should I do if I have bad breath?
Bad breath (also known as halitosis) can be humiliating and caused by a variety of factors, including the time of day (morning breath), poor oral hygiene habits, gum disease, cavities, and certain foods. If you have bad breath, practice proper oral hygiene habits, increase your water intake, quit smoking (if you smoke), and visit your dentist regularly.
How often should I brush and floss?
Brush your teeth at least twice a day to avoid plaque buildup. If your gums are sensitive, use an ADA-approved soft bristle toothbrush and brush at a 45-degree angle to make sure you clean hard-to-reach places. You also want to gently brush your tongue to prevent bad breath. We also recommend that you floss between teeth at least once a day to help clean the gum line and spaces between teeth.
Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?
While there has been some concern about amalgam fillings over the years, the ADA deems them safe, and at least 75% of dentists across the U.S. use them. While these fillings do contain mercury, they do not contain a high enough amount of mercury to cause damage to your health.
How often should I have a dental exam and cleaning?
Most people need to visit the dentist for routine cleanings at least twice a year. However, your dentist may recommend more visits depending on your oral health. At your exam, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth for damage and decay, perform x-rays, clean your teeth, polish your teeth, offer fluoride treatments, advise you on diet, and discuss any oral health concerns.
Why is it important to use dental floss?
While brushing teeth removes food particles and dirt on your teeth, it doesn’t remove what’s between your teeth, so that’s where flossing comes in. Floss properly using about 12-16 inches of floss wrapped around your middle fingers. Then, use your thumbs and fingers to move the floss between your teeth and remove anything that shouldn’t be there.
How can cosmetic dentistry improve the appearance of my smile?

Cosmetic dentistry restores oral health and also makes your smile seem whole again. It’s become extremely popular in the 21st century and includes treatments like teeth whitening, composite fillings, porcelain veneers and crowns, dental implants, and orthodontic work.

What are porcelain veneers and how can they improve my smile?
Porcelain veneers are thin slivers of tooth-shaped porcelain that fit over your teeth to give them a polished, whole, healthy, and natural look that improves your smile. They don’t stain and are used to treat several conditions, including discolored teeth, uneven spaces, worn or chipped teeth, crowding, misshapen teeth, and teeth that are too small or too big.
What can I do about stained or discolored teeth?
Teeth whitening systems have become all the rage, and professional treatments work better than over-the-counter whitening kits. At Northpark Dental, we offer pre-loaded whitening trays that are worn for 30-60 minutes per day, generally over the course of 10 days, that give you a brighter, and more confident smile.
